The Football Fan's Birthing Plan

In the months leading up to the arrival of the twins, Erin and I have been advised by just about every professional we've met with to come up with a birthing plan.  The birthing plan provides an outline for all the things we want to see happen immediately before, during and after delivery - such as desired pain medication, people present, who cuts the cords etc.  It's been stressed that we come up with this birthing plan early - to avoid any unnecessary surprises on "d-day."

This week it occurred to me that there's a critical piece missing from many birthing plans - specifically for fathers (and mothers) who are expecting in late August or early September. If you're a football fan, who's covering for you in your fantasy football draft(s) should the babies decide to arrive on draft day?

Heaven forbid you throw yourself at the mercy of your league's auto-draft and wind up with a roster full of Kyle Ortons, Correll Buckhalters and Brandon Stokleys.  Lucky from me, my little brother agreed to cover for me in my East Coast draft should the little ones decide to show up early.  Thanks Jason.

So, my advice to all expecting football fans: make sure you consider a fantasy football surrogate in your birthing plan. Write it down.  Ask them early.

If enough of us start doing this, it might eventually become a position of honor for the person you select... sort of like a pigskin Godparent for your kid.

  1. It also would be wise for expectant parents of babies due during football season to designate a surrogate to submit weekly picks and select fantasy rosters.
I'm soliciting volunteers to be my backup picker for my confidence pool, and if the babies come (as I sort of expect they will) the first weekend of football, that would also include covering my dad's picks, because I'm his backup plan for that week.

  2. you know that GG is always there for you to submit picks for you anytime you need me to. of course, if you pick the broncos i will manually adjust your pick to the opposing team :)

seriously though, i happily volunteer and also know that you can submit picks early in our pool. for instance, right now you can go ahead and submit the first 2-3 weeks worth of picks to be safe.

PS why is there a pic of Randy Moss as a Viking? has not not paid attention to the NFL in 5 years??
